Working as a Researcher and Translator for S. Someetharan’s documentary Burning Memories was one of the most sobering projects I have ever undertaken. The documentary meticulously pieces together the political climate of the time, the testimonies of those who witnessed the fire, and the deeply controversial efforts in later years to "rebuild" the library over the physical and psychological scars of the past.

Ready is an abstract, fast-paced montage that juxtaposes the ordinary routines of human life—makeup, starting a motorcycle, tying a shoelace, answering a phone—against the sudden, irreversible reality of a flatlining heartbeat and a coffin. It is a stark exploration of our illusion of control. We spend our lives constantly "getting ready" for the next moment, the next task, the next stage of life, completely ignoring the one inevitability we are truly walking towards.

Translating a book allows you the luxury of page space, but subtitling a film is an exercise in ruthless precision. You have two lines, about forty characters, and a fraction of a second to capture a character’s entire emotional state without distracting the audience from the visual frame.
